Trevor Jones has written the music for over 60 movies, working regularly in both Hollywood and the UK. In his most comprehensive interview ever, Jones talks to Tommy Pearson about all aspects of his career and answers questions sent in by Stage and Screen Online listeners.
In Part One, Jones talks about his background, how he fell in love with cinema as a boy in South Africa, how he ended up scoring films, and details his work on Excalibur, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Last of the Mohicans and Cliffhanger.

Paul Grabowsky

Paul Grabowsky, the Australian pianist and composer, talks to Tommy Pearson about his multi-faceted career. Grabowsky is perhaps best known for his work in jazz and alongside his successful career as jazz soloist and collaborator he has also worked in television (in music and as an executive) and film and has recently been appointed artistic director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts. In this interview, Grabowsky talks about how jazz came into his life, how he started in film and television music, his work as a session player for Jerry Goldsmith and eventually stepping into Goldsmith's shoes as the regular composer for old friend, director Fred Schepisi (Last Orders, Empire Falls). He also talks about working on the Michael Caine boxing drama, Shiner and outlines the Australian film industry and its composers.

Christopher Gunning

Christopher Gunning is a multi award-winning composer for TV and film who is perhaps best known for his evocative theme to the international TV hit, Agatha Christie's Poirot. Other scores include Middlemarch, Cold Lazarus, Porterhouse Blue and Wild Africa as well as the successful Martini TV commercial campaign which ran for 30 years. This year, Gunning won a Bafta for his work on the movie La Vie en Rose, the biopic about Edith Piaf, and Gunning talks in detail about writing the underscore and re-recording the classic Piaf songs.
Recorded backstage before a Filmharmonic concert at London's Royal Albert Hall (battling against the loud air-con!).

Alex Heffes

Alex Heffes first came to international prominence with his evocative score to the Oscar-winning documentary, One Day in September, directed by Kevin MacDonald. Heffes and MacDonald have gone on to collaborate on Touching the Void and The Last King of Scotland and are currently working on the big-screen adaptation of State of Play. Other movie credits include The Parole Officer, Out of Reach, Sweeney Todd and the controversial documentary The Bridge. Tommy Pearson met Heffes at BAFTA headquarters in London to talk about his career so far.

George Fenton

George Fenton is one of the UK's most successful film and television composers. He talks to Tommy Pearson about his collaborations with directors Richard Attenborough, Ken Loach, Andy Tennant and the film-maker and naturalist David Attenborough. In Part One, Fenton outlines his work with Richard Attenborough (on Gandhi, Cry Freedom and Shadowlands) and Ken Loach (on Ladybird, Ladybird, Sweet Sixteen, Land and Freedom and many others) - two very different directors who make contrasting demands on Fenton as a collaborator. Fenton also discusses much of his early work in television.
In Part Two Fenton talks about working on the BBC natural history films of David Attenborough (including Trials of Life, The Blue Planet and Planet Earth), the extraordinary success of the Blue Planet Live concerts, and the big-screen romantic comedies and dramas of director Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama, Hitch, Fool's Gold).

Shostakovich's Odna

Mark Fitz-Gerald talks to Tommy Pearson about discovering, reconstructing, arranging and performing Dmitri Shostakovich's score for the 1929/31 Sound/Silent film, Odna (Alone). Set in late 1920s Leningrad and then in the uncompromising surroundings of the Altai Mountains in Russian Mongolia, the film features a dazzling score for a huge orchestra that includes a banda, the earliest use on a soundtrack of a Theremin, a barrel organ, a soprano, mezzo-soprano and tenor, a choir and an 'overtone' singer. Mark Fitz-Gerald's performance of the score on Naxos with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra is the first complete recording and is Naxos's CD of the Month for January.

In the first of a two part interview, film director Mike Newell talks to Tommy Pearson about his first experiences of music as a boy chorister, using music in his early Granada TV projects in the 1960s and working in movies with composers like Richard Hartley (The Awakening, Dance with a Stranger), Elmer Bernstein (Amazing Grace & Chuck) and Patrick Doyle (Into the West, Donnie Brasco, Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire). Newell also talks more generally about collaborating with composers, getting to like the themes they bring him, how to avoid throwing out a score and how much he loves scoring sessions.
